Our trip to the" Royal Highland Show" in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was a sight to be seen, the whole of the main arena covered in Bay with 4 white socks and a blaze. It was a chilly morning in Scotland, a morning that we would normally have beanies, gloves & coats on.... but not the Scots, this is their summer, they come out in T-shirts. The day was Thursday 21st June, day 1 of The Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland. We were lucky enough to be in Edinburgh for this, it was our last day and it also happened to be the day the Clydesdales were competing.
As we walked around waiting for the classes to begin everyone was hard at work..... The first place we spotted was the HEAVY HORSE WASH AREA. There were mares, foals, geldings, stallions all in there together. Owners and strappers all scrubbing away, many, many washers on their hands and knees getting those socks white.
we entered the stables next, there was white face after white face looking at us over stable doors. The aisle ways top to tail with bodies. The interesting thing was after the socks had been washed and dried sawdust is then rubbed through the feathers to give them a yellowish look.
After our time in the stable block it was out to the main arena.... Never have I seen a whole main arena filled with Clydesdales. To give you an idea of the size, the actual showground's were about four times the size of Melbourne Showground's.
So there I sat in the Grand Stand for a few hours, which is how long it took to run the yearling filly class. There were 36 fillies presented.... What a job for the judge. But judge it he did. These photos are of strappers, owners and horses waiting for presentations. Every body just stands waiting patiently for what can be hours.
This was just a sample of what we saw that day...... A once in a life time experience. Amazing.
