Avoca Black Saint

2020 has been difficult on so many levels, and a lot of it unprecedented.

The end of June topped it at Avoca Park, when Leanne her my final goodbye to Avoca Black Saint. He was 34 years old and had lived the last 29 years here at Avoca Park.

He was purchased in 1991, the same year Leanne and John purchased this property, he was perfect in Leanne’s eyes “black with 4 white socks and a star”…… She was 22 years old and he was her dream.

He will never know the impact he had on Leanne’s life, the places they went, the experiences they had, he did them just because Leanne asked him to.

She was a beginner rider; he was a 5yo uneducated Clydesdale cross.

Together they went through the Adult Riding club levels, then on to EA, then they went through every level, sometimes winning but mainly, quietly in the placings. Leanne and Ziggy as he was affectionately know as at home represented Victoria at State and National level during his FEI years. Then represented Australia in 2000 in the World Dressage Challenge.

They drove to the Hunter Valley and trained with Heath Ryan twice a year for many years, then followed that up with Sydney CDI, NSW and National Championships, Leanne lost count of the hours they spent doing those trips. He did it with Leanne and for Leanne each and every time.

Avoca Park will live on in his memory, for without the journey this partnership had, Leanne would not be the rider, teacher or trainer she became, he allowed her to learn without complaint. In return she always worked with trainers who believed in the well-being of the horse.

May he be somewhere where there is knee high grass as far as the eye can see.

Until next time my friend.
